Everything on this page is labelled: what an official source states, what we decided, and what has to be confirmed again for the actual dates.

Availability, driving conditions and trail safety are live checks, not design decisions. Everything marked “must be rechecked” has to be confirmed for the actual dates before this becomes a booking.

Important for 2026: Bollenwees currently reports most listed weekends as sold out. The plan is complete, but the date is chosen only once Bollenwees confirms the private room. Weekday availability can still be requested directly.

The four days

What we actually do

These are rough estimates and they will be wrong. They are here so we can judge a day for ourselves, not to schedule it. Only timings taken from a source are marked.

  1. 1FRI

    The long drive south

    • Drive Antwerp → Appenzell ≈ 8 h

Use live navigation and build in fuel or charging, food and traffic stops. Check in at Café-Hotel Appenzell, leave the car behind the hotel, dinner there. Do not assume the drive time or a late check-in without confirming.

  2. 2SAT

    Up to the lake

    • Drive to Brülisau and park ≈ 30 min
    • Walk in to Bollenwees via Sämtisersee ≈ 2 h Fact

Park at the Hoher Kasten lower station, Dorf 22, 9058 Brülisau, and register the car in zone 901 — coins, Parkingpay, Easypark or TWINT, never a card. The walk runs via Pfannenstiel, Brüeltobel, Plattenbödeli and Sämtisersee. Lunch carried; dinner from the inn menu; breakfast included.

  3. 3SUN

    Down to the same car

    • Walk back to the same car ≈ 2 h
    • Drive back to Appenzell ≈ 30 min

Eat the included Appenzeller breakfast and ask the hosts for current trail advice before leaving. If the descent is unsuitable, ask about the official Ruhesitz alternative. The same car is waiting at Brülisau.

  4. 4MON

    Home, unhurried

    • Drive Appenzell → Antwerp ≈ 8 h

Breakfast, check the live road situation, drive home. Monday stays a full return day rather than pretending an Alpine weekend fits neatly around two workdays.
